Six Osaka love hotels compared for a rabuho joshikai — group size, karaoke, baths and what the plan actually costs per person. Prices and limits taken from the hotels’ own Japanese pages.

In Japan, love hotels are not only for couples. There is a well-established way of using them with friends called ラブホ女子会 (rabuho joshikai) — a love hotel girls’ gathering. Instead of squeezing a group into a normal twin room, you book something large and over-equipped: karaoke, a bath big enough for the whole group, a projector, room service, and often food and drink you are allowed to bring in yourself.

Several Osaka hotels now sell plans built specifically for it, with pyjama rental, beauty kits, welcome desserts and decoration services. Below are six of them, compared on the things that decide the booking — how many of you can actually fit, whether the karaoke is in your room, and what a night really costs each.

The basics

What Is a Love Hotel?

A love hotel (ラブホテル, rabu hoteru) is a short-stay hotel found all over Japan. Rooms are rented by the hour (a “rest”) or overnight (a “stay”), check-in is private and usually automated, and the rooms tend to be larger and better equipped than a business hotel room at a similar price.

A love hotel girls’ night — ラブホ女子会, rabuho joshikai — is a group of friends booking a love hotel room as a private party space instead of as a couple’s room. It became mainstream in Japan over the 2010s, and plenty of hotels now advertise plans built for it.

Why groups book one, and what comes with the room

The logic is practical. In a Japanese city, a love hotel room is often the cheapest way to get a large private room that comes with its own entertainment. Depending on the hotel, that can mean:

  • A karaoke machine in the room — no time slot, no queue, nobody else in it
  • A bath, jacuzzi or sauna considerably larger than a normal hotel bathroom
  • A projector or a very large screen for films and streaming
  • Room service, and at many hotels permission to bring your own food and drink
  • Beauty kit: hair irons, facial steamers, skincare sets, bath salts
  • Room wear, so nobody has to pack pyjamas
  • Decorations — and at some hotels, staff who will set up a surprise before you arrive

Groups use it for birthdays, pre-wedding parties, catching up with friends who live far away, or simply a night in that beats sitting in a bar. It is an ordinary, unremarkable thing to do — staff are used to it, contact is minimal, and rooms are usually chosen from a lit panel rather than at a desk.

Love hotels are still regulated as adult accommodation, though, so rules about group size and who may check in vary between properties. That is why the group-size line matters more than anything else on this page.

How to Book a Love Hotel in Osaka

Rest vs. Stay

Love hotels sell two things. 休憩 (kyūkei, “rest”) is a block of hours — anything from 90 minutes to ten, priced by duration and time of day. 宿泊 (shukuhaku, “stay”) is overnight, usually with a fixed check-in window in the evening and checkout the next morning. All six sell both: Hotel Lotus Umeda has a rest from ¥3,900 a room, Rose Lips Shinsaibashi a three-hour one from ¥2,900 a head.

Watch the check-in windows. Rose Lips Shinsaibashi starts overnight at 18:00 on a weekday but 21:00 on Friday and at weekends — three hours you may have planned to already be in the room.

Booking Online vs. Walk-In

Many Osaka love hotels still run on walk-ins: you arrive, choose an available room from a lit panel in the lobby, and pay at a machine on the way out. Hotels that advertise girls’ plans are more likely to take reservations — through their own Japanese sites, or through Japanese plan marketplaces. Expedia lists all six for ordinary two-guest bookings. On a Friday or Saturday night, reserving is strongly advised whichever route you take.

How Many People Can Share a Room

This is the single thing to settle before anything else, and the answer is per room type, not per hotel. Of the six here, Balian publishes a hard number on its own site — four, with larger groups only by arrangement. The two Rose Lips hotels publish group plans up to five and six, and Hotel Alps sells its suite plan for up to ten. Fine Garden and Hotel Lotus publish no maximum at all and simply charge +50% for each extra guest.

Extra guests are rarely free. Balian, Fine Garden and Hotel Lotus each add 50% of the room rate per additional person. Hotel Alps charges a flat ¥1,000–2,000 per extra guest on its girls’ plan.

Per Room or Per Person?

The pricing basis changes the answer completely, and it is not consistent across hotels. Rose Lips Shinsaibashi prices its girls’ plan per person. Rose Lips Tsuruhashi, Balian, Fine Garden and Hotel Lotus price per room, and Hotel Alps prices its plan per room for a group of four. For a group of five, per-room is dramatically cheaper — ¥11,000 split five ways is about ¥2,200 each, where ¥6,000 a head is ¥30,000 for the same five people.

Booking in English

All six can be seen and booked in English on Expedia. What you cannot do in English is book the group plan: those live on the hotels’ Japanese sites, and one of them (Fine Garden) is a machine translation rather than an English booking flow. If your group is larger than two, the realistic options are to book the Japanese plan with a translation tool, have a Japanese-speaking friend or your accommodation call, or accept a two-person room booked in English.

Payment, Check-In and Cancellation

Cash is still common, and some hotels are cash-only at the in-room payment machine — carry enough yen even if you expect to pay by card. Check-in is frequently contactless: a lit panel of available rooms, a key, and no conversation. Cancellation terms vary widely and are often stricter than at a business hotel, especially on weekend plans, so read the specific plan’s terms at the moment you book rather than the hotel’s general policy page.

Good to know

Osaka Love Hotels: Frequently Asked Questions

Can a group of women stay at a love hotel in Osaka?

Yes. Four of the six hotels on this page publish a plan aimed specifically at groups of women, and a fifth advertises one. Limits differ: Balian publishes four, Rose Lips Tsuruhashi five, Rose Lips Shinsaibashi six, Hotel Alps ten. It is a per-hotel and per-room-type answer, never a universal one.

Can foreigners book love hotels in Osaka?

Yes. There is no rule against foreign guests, and all six here appear in English on Expedia. The practical barrier is that the group plans are sold only in Japanese, and some hotels are cash-only at the payment machine.

Can three or more people share one room?

Sometimes, and it depends on the room type rather than the hotel. Rooms sold under a 女子会 plan are the ones designed for it. Extra guests almost always cost more — often 50% of the room rate each, sometimes a flat per-head fee.

Do love hotels have karaoke?

Many do, but often only in specific rooms. Rose Lips Shinsaibashi has JOYSOUND f1 in ten named rooms; Hotel Lotus has it in exactly two, 307 and 308; Balian’s karaoke is a free shared room downstairs rather than in your own; Hotel Alps has ended its karaoke altogether. Book the room, not the hotel.

What is a girls’ party plan?

A 女子会プラン is a package a hotel sells to groups, usually women only. It typically pairs a room that fits more than two people with some mix of extended hours, room wear, welcome desserts, skincare rental, beauty appliances and party decorations. What is included varies a lot — Rose Lips Shinsaibashi lends you wallpaper tape and will set up a surprise; Rose Lips Tsuruhashi adds a free karaoke plan.

Is it cheaper than booking a normal hotel?

Often, per person, once you count what comes with the room. Rose Lips Tsuruhashi at ¥11,000 per room split five ways is about ¥2,200 each for a private room with karaoke. But per-person plans work differently — six people at ¥6,000 each is ¥36,000 — and Saturday overnight rates at Fine Garden reach ¥25,300. Compare the specific plan, not the category.

Can I book a love hotel online?

Yes, in two different ways. The international platforms take English bookings for a two-guest room. The hotels’ own Japanese sites take bookings for the group plans, and Japanese plan marketplaces list many of them too. Walking in is still normal, but it is a gamble on a Friday or Saturday night.
